Guillaume Andelot
France

A newcomer to Carve Carrbridge,  ‘Le Grizzly Sculpteur’ has been practicing sculpture for 15 years. He works throughout France undertaking private commissions and demonstrations for public events.  This is his first time in an international competition.  He was French champion in 2017 and 2019 at the Championnat de France. Welcome to Carve Carrbridge.

Simon Archer
United Kingdom

Simon is from Liverpool, UK and has a formal background in Fine Art and sculpture and now works exclusively as a wood sculptor/chainsaw artist. A regular since 2013, Simon will also compete at the European Championships this year. Simon entered ‘Woodland Cathedral’ in the 2020 Virtual Carve which impressed the judges with the detail in the carving.

Pete Bowsher
Scotland

A well know face at Carve Carrbridge, Pete has competed for the Claymore Trophy 15 times and won on 8 occasions. In those years he was not the overall winner he was 2nd and 3rd.  Oftentimes ousted from the top spot by fellow competitor Iain Chalmers who will be here again in 2022.

However to add a bit of spice,  a win in 2022 will mean taking the Claymore from son Sam, the virtual champion in 2020.

Sam Bowsher
Scotland

Winner of the Virtual Carve Carrbridge in 2020 with ‘Ready Tae Roam’ Having grown up with Carve Carrbridge, Sam made his competition debut at Carve Carrbridge in 2019, competing against dad Pete.

Since then Sam has competed internationally and has continued to build his own chainsaw carving business, exhibition carving including at the Royal Highland Show and a number of events in the UK in 2022.

Mike Burgess
England

This will be Mike’s 4th appearance at Carve Carrbridge and another family contest.
This time brother vs brother against Jonathan Sherwood. Dad Tim and Uncle Andy have also competed at Carve Carrbridge and are longstanding members of the Carve Carrbridge family. Have a look at Mike’s beer opening technique on FB

Alice Buttress
Scotland

Local artist and potter, Alice entered the competition as a Novice Carver for the first time 17 years ago.  This will be her fifteen time representing the village and the only female contestant this year.  Alice is the creator of the Wood Spirit that proudly stands at the Inverness /Grantown road junction and, in conjunction with husband Jeff, delivered the Bridge 300 carving in the village car park.
Alice has had a number of commissions locally and many of her other carvings can be seen in private gardens and in the woodlands around the village on the Carving Trail. Alice appeared in the BBC Scotland Loggerheads series in 2022

Iain Chalmers
Scotland

Iain has been a consistently placed competitor for many years, his show appearances this year include The Royal Highland Show and the Black Isle Show. Iain is well known for many large local creations including in the Base station on Cairngorm Mountain and in the Landmark Forest Adventure Park. 

A local favourite, we know Iain will please the crowds with his work and the colourful carving in the extended Children’s play area on the field was part funded by the proceeds of Carve Carrbridge.

Daniel Cordell
UK

After studying art and design Daniel has produced sculpture from his studio in Hertfordshire since 2003, as well as travelling the globe participating in events.

Daniel generally uses timber from trees that are deemed dead, damaged or dangerous, including those that are still standing.

Although Daniel’s skills are broad, he’s instinctively drawn to wood and has specialised in large scale green wood carving and constructing. Daniel has completed many commissions in a range of environments from Gardens to Schools, Zoo’s, Playgrounds, Sculpture trails, Nature reserves and London parks.

Heather Crompton 
England
Heather was a late entrant and headed north with fellow Carver Chris. Heather has a background in Fine Art and we hope to find out more about her in future events

James Elliott
Scotland

Pet Portraits, Elephants, Centurions, and Giant Salmon, James specialises in things on a large scale. With a passion for human form, wildlife and historical subjects.

With a background in illustration and tree surgery, chainsaw sculpture was a natural progression and fusion of 2 passions for this Glasgow based wood sculptor.

Having placed 2nd in the James will compete in the English Open and Sandringham Cup in 2021 he looks forward to competing in both again this year. This will be his 3rd visit to Carve Carrbridge having been lucky enough to compete in his 1st year as a Carve Carrbridge carver.

Shane Green
England

Another newcomer this time from Yorkshire . Shane has been an artist for many years but have been specializing in the art of chainsaw-carving the last few years taking me to many country shows both competitive and non-competitive, always been wanting to compete at Carrbridge.

John Hayes
Ireland

John had a great time at Carve Carrbridge in 2018 and is back for another challenge! Competitions this year include the US Open , Chetwynd Canada, the English Open and Montana International.
Master Craftsman John is the creator of Dragonslayer a world record beating longest carving from a single piece of wood.

Peter Hausgaard Gregersen
Denmark

Our second Newcomer in 2022. Peter discovered Chainsaw carving 20 years ago and is our 2nd Danish Viking ( in a nice way) following Niels Ejnar Petersen to Carrbridge. The teacher changed profession in 2018 and this 4 hr chainsaw carving of big logs is new territory again.
The burning question is .. can he also Ceilidh!

Henry Hepworth Smith
England

Another late entrant and worthy competitor to enter the Arena. Placed first in the Rising Stars Category at the English Open we look forward to following his Carving Career

 

Volodymyr Kravchuk
Ukraine

Another first for Carve Carrbridge our first competitor from Ukraine. Volodymyr’s application has inspired our T shirt colours for 2022 in the colours of the Ukrainian Flag.

A track record of competitive carving in his home country 

Carve Carrbridge will be his only competition in 2022.

Understandably social media links are not working at time of writing but we will update when available. and fingers crossed he can join us.

Roni MacDonald
Scotland

Carve Carrbridge is in its’ 19th year and Roni has been with us from the start. A longstanding friend of the event we look forward to seeing his skilful work again in 2022. Roni ‘s exhibition carving includes Morven Highland Games in beautiful Argyll.

Dave Roberts
Wales

When a hobby becomes a passion and dreams are enacted. Based in Aberdeenshire, this will be David’s 7th time competing at the Scottish Open Chainsaw Carving Competition, hot footing it from the English Open the weekend before.  David is known for his Dragons and winged creatures and is one of 3 Welshman competing this year.

Garry Shand
Scotland
Garry, originally from Huntly, Aberdeenshire first competed at Carve Carrbridge in 2008 and has been every year since
Garry placed 3rd in 2015 with his popular carving of “Groot” from the Marvel movie “Guardians of the Galaxy”
Garry is a full-time chainsaw sculptor operating from his home/workshop in Drummuir, Moray.
Although he enjoys travelling to enjoys travelling to international carving events and competitions, he spends most of his time carving commissions and his popular “wee coo’s”!
In 2019 his carving of a ‘Heilan Teuchter’ won the highest bid in the Grand Auction. Garry delivered for the Virtual Carve in 2020 and you can check out his video there for a demonstration.

Jonathan Sherwood
United Kingdom

Since we first met Jonathan in 2018 as Best Newcomer’ the family has grown and we look forward to meeting Katie and ‘Baby’. Could this be a 3rd generation chainsaw artist?  Based in Harrogate, Jonathan is a materials engineer and carves part time and a little bit of friendly sibling rivalry against brother Mike again in 2022.

Jonny Stableford
Scotland

Well known for wearing the most decorative sporran at the ceilidh and the self proclaimed ‘highest jumper and fastest spinner at the ceilidh’. Jonny first competed in 2010 and  achieved 3rd place in 2012.

‘Jonny Chainsaw’ is a freelance chainsaw operator, dividing his time between carving wood and ice from his workshop in Falkirk and working in forestry and arboriculture all over Scotland.

Craig ‘Steeley’ Steel
Scotland

An arborist from the southwest corner of Scotland, Dundonald in South Ayshire, Craig ‘Steeley’ Steele has a lifelong passion for rural pursuits. This is his 9th year at the event he came along for a number of years to watch before picking up his saws to show us what he’s made of.
He loves the features and textures of wood and draws inspiration from the wildlife and natural environment of the woodlands where he works part-time allowing space to practice his Carving craft.
Whilst exploring the island beaches and hidden gems of Scotland, Steeley is always to be found where the party is!

Michael Tamozus
Germany
2018 winner with ‘Girl in the Wind’ , 2019 with Girl with the Lantern Michael is going for a hat trick. From Bad Salgau near Lake Constance and is entering the event for the 9th time plus the Virtual Carve in 2020 with his entry ‘Venus d’Arbre’.  Michael won best new entrant way back in 2009. The fluidity of his work captured the judges attention and we look forward to getting a real world close up of his carving in 2022.

Ian Williams
Wales
Attending the event for a 4th year, Ian comes from North Wales and was a Firefighter for 30 yrs, carving a a hobby for 16 years. He decided to finish fire fighting and carve full time and has been carving for 3 years full time, but still learning.

‘I love Carrbridge as it is a massive challenge to carve in 4 hrs, the atmosphere is fantastic and I love being here.’ Ian has competed at Carve Carrbridge since 2016 and won People’s Choice in the Virtual Carve of 2020 with ‘Parliament of Wise Owls’

All his carvings are made from trees which have either fell naturally or need to be felled for woodland management purposes and his aim is to try to ‘make the trees come back to life with all of the beauty of the wood showing through’.

Chris Wood
Wales

Chris became a chainsaw carver in the late 1990s after being made redundant from his job as a steelworker in South Wales.  20 years on and he hasn’t looked back.  He has made hundreds of different pieces. including enormous cones, war memorials, faces and masks, animals, furniture, miners and dragons. Plus, lots of dragons.
This is Chris’ second outing at Carve Carrbridge and 1st time in person. His 1st Nation Chief was a virtual hit in 2020 achieving 2nd place.
He has competed in the US Open, and Chetwynd in Canada and will take the road north from the English Open.
